Arsenal must continue to focus on West Ham

Date:

Arsenal’s Title Push Meets West Ham’s Survival Battle

By Martyn Herman – Reuters

As the Premier League enters its final three matchdays, Arsenal travel to London Stadium knowing a win could all but seal their first league crown since 2004. The Gunners sit on 76 points from 35 games, five clear of Manchester City, who have a game in hand and could cut the deficit to two points with a victory over Brentford on Saturday.

Title race dynamics

If City triumph at the Etihad, Arsenal would still control their own destiny: a win over West Ham would leave them needing just one more point from the final two fixtures to guarantee the championship. Conversely, a slip‑up by City combined with an Arsenal victory would effectively hand the title to Mikel Arteta’s side before the season’s concluding day.

According to the Premier League’s official statistics, Arsenal have scored 11 goals in their last two league visits to the London Stadium, underscoring their attacking potency on familiar ground.

West Ham’s relegation fight

The Hammers occupy 18th place with 36 points from 35 matches, just one point behind Tottenham Hotspur, who climbed out of the drop zone after an away win at Aston Villa. A victory for West Ham would not only boost their survival hopes but also increase pressure on Spurs, who host Leeds United on Monday.

Declan Rice, now an Arsenal midfielder, acknowledged the emotional weight of facing his former club:

“[West Ham] are the club that gave me everything. Without West Ham there is no me and I truly believe that. They gave me a chance when Chelsea didn’t have a chance and a lot of people there really pushed me. Lots of good things about this club. It’s not nice to see the position they’re in. But it’s football and I’ve got a job to do on Sunday.”

Rice captained West Ham to the UEFA Conference League title in 2023 before his summer move to Arsenal, a transfer that underscores the deep personal connection he retains with the East London side.

European qualification picture

While the title race garners headlines, the battle for Champions League and Europa League places remains tightly contested. Manchester United have already secured a top‑four finish, guaranteeing Champions League football for next season. Liverpool and Aston Villa are viewed as the leading candidates to fill the remaining Champions League spots, though both need victories this weekend — Liverpool against Chelsea and Villa versus Burnley — to solidify their positions.

Bournemouth, currently sixth, could stay in the European conversation with a win at Fulham, while clubs such as Newcastle United (13th) and others continue to chase a late surge for Europa League qualification.

What lies ahead

With three games left, the outcome of this weekend’s fixtures could dramatically clarify both the title chase and the relegation scrap. Arsenal’s experience in high‑pressure situations, combined with Arteta’s tactical discipline, gives them a slight edge, but West Ham’s desperation to avoid the drop promises a fiercely contested encounter at London Stadium.
