BHP announces a leadership reshuffle under new CEO Brandon Craig

Date:

BHP Group Shakes Up Its Leadership Team

Why the Changes?

BHP, one of the world’s biggest mining companies, announced a reshuffle of its leadership team. The move comes as new CEO Brandon Craig prepares to take over on July 1, 2026, after Mike Henry steps down. Craig says the new structure will help the company:

  • Build stronger teams with the right skills and experience
  • Focus more closely on different regions
  • Carry out its long‑term growth plan
  • Improve safety, operational performance, and value for shareholders

New Roles and Who’s Taking Them

Jessica Farrell – President, North America

Effective July 1, 2026, Jessica Farrell will lead BHP’s North American operations. She currently serves as Vice President of Innovation and previously ran the Western Australia Nickel Asset. Farrell has over 20 years of experience across various commodities and legal areas. Craig highlighted her ability to manage complex transitions while keeping safety, people, and community outcomes front‑and‑center. Until a permanent South America President is hired, Farrell will also temporarily oversee that region.

Edgar Basto – Chief Enterprise Performance Officer

Edgar Basto stays on the leadership team as Chief Operating Officer, now renamed Chief Enterprise Performance Officer. He will continue to look after health, safety, and BHP’s operating system, with extra focus on contractor safety and operational discipline across the group.

Geraldine Slattery – President of Australia

Geraldine Slattery remains President of Australia and will now also take charge of Copper South Australia. This consolidates all Australian operations under her leadership.

Other Leaders Staying in Place

Key executives who keep their current roles include:

  • Vandita Pant – Chief Financial Officer
  • Rag Udd – Commercial Director
  • Catherine Raw – Development Director

What Stays the Same?

While some roles are changing, BHP’s core strategy remains steady. Craig’s appointment is seen as a sign of continuity, especially the push to grow copper and potash assets in Canada, the United States, and South America. Craig himself has been with BHP since 1999, most recently leading the Americas business and before that the iron ore division in Western Australia.

Market Reaction

On the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, BHP’s share price dipped 1.63 % to R668.08 on the day of the announcement. Despite the drop, the stock is still about 54 % higher than it was a year earlier.

Conclusion

BHP’s leadership reshuffle aims to make the company more agile and focused as it pursues growth in key minerals. With Jessica Farrell stepping up to lead North America (and temporarily South America), Edgar Basto sharpening performance oversight, and Geraldine Slattery consolidating Australian operations, the team is set to execute Craig’s vision. The changes reflect a balance of continuity and fresh focus, positioning BHP to meet future challenges while delivering value to shareholders and communities alike.
