Chilling video shows gunmen opening fire in a deadly attack on the Cape

Date:

Nyanga Shooting: What Happened

When and Where

The incident took place on a Tuesday morning before 9 a.m. at the corner of Moonwood Drive and Sheffield Road in Nyanga, Western Cape. The area is known as a taxi stand where minibus taxis often park.

The Video Evidence

An 87‑second clip surfaced online, capturing the scene from a panning view. The footage begins with a wide shot of the taxi stand and then focuses on a man who enters the frame.

Description of the Shooter

  • Wearing a black cap, white shoes, a brown jersey, and black pants.
  • Carrying a blue bag that conceals an object later identified as a firearm.

What the Camera Records

  1. The man walks toward the parked taxis.
  2. People nearby start running away, suggesting shots may already have been fired.
  3. He raises an AK‑47 rifle and fires at the nearest minibus taxi, hitting a person multiple times.
  4. Chaos erupts: bystanders flee, a blue vehicle reverses, and two other men appear, shooting at the blue vehicle before its driver escapes.
  5. After the initial shooting, the man with the rifle disappears from view, but another unknown individual is seen running with a gun. The shooter later returns to retrieve his bag, checks the minibus taxi, and then flees the scene.

Police Statement

Provincial police spokesman Colonel André Traut confirmed that the shooting is believed to be linked to taxi‑related conflict. According to his preliminary report:

  • Around 8:30 a.m., unknown suspects opened fire on a group of individuals at the intersection.
  • Four adult males suffered fatal gunshot wounds and were declared dead on the scene.
  • Two additional males were wounded and taken to hospital in critical condition.
  • No arrests have been made at this time.

Reaction from the Taxi Council

The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) Western Cape issued a strong condemnation:

  • Santaco PRO Makhosandile Tumana said the organization rejects all forms of violence and urges law enforcement to act swiftly.
  • He emphasized that motives cannot be speculated while the investigation continues.
  • Santaco pledged to promote peaceful dispute resolution within the taxi industry and extended condolences to the victims’ families.
  • The council also called for calm to prevent further retaliation.

Ongoing Investigation

Police are reviewing the video, interviewing witnesses, and collecting forensic evidence. Authorities have asked anyone with information to come forward. The case remains active, and updates are expected as investigators piece together the motive and identify the suspects.

Conclusion

The Nyanga shooting is a tragic reminder of how quickly violence can erupt in public spaces. While the video provides a clear visual of the events, many questions remain about why it happened and who is responsible. Law enforcement, community leaders, and taxi organizations are working together to seek justice, support the victims’ families, and restore peace to the neighborhood. Staying informed and cooperating with authorities are essential steps toward preventing similar incidents in the future.
