Shocking Assault on a Toddler in Maphophe Village

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched an intensive investigation after a 22‑month‑old girl was sexually assaulted in Maphophe village. The case was reported in the Saselamani police area on Wednesday, May 6, and has sparked outrage across the community.

What Happened?

The child’s mother noticed that her daughter could not stand when she woke up. Upon closer look, she saw swelling on the toddler’s left knee and rushed her to a local hospital. Medical staff confirmed that the girl had been sexually abused.

Police Response

A rape case was opened at Saselamani police station and later transferred to the Giyani Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit (FCS) for a specialized investigation. Provincial police spokesman Col. Malesela Ledwaba said the suspect is still unknown.

Leadership Speaks Out

Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe called the act “deeply disturbing and immoral.” She emphasized that the child cannot speak for herself, so it is the duty of authorities and the community to seek justice.

“This is a shocking and heartbreaking crime. Child Protection Month was created to remind us all that children must be safe, and yet here we are,” Hadebe said.

She urged anyone with information to come forward, promising that the perpetrator will be found and held accountable.
