Don’t ignore Bangladesh’s hungry tigers, warns Markram Proteas

South Africa’s Busy Home Summer: Markram Warns Against Underestimating Bangladesh

With a packed schedule of home internationals looming, South African captain Aiden Markram is urging his teammates to treat every opponent with respect — especially a Bangladesh side that has shown rapid improvement in recent months.

Bangladesh’s Rising Pace Attack

Bangladesh’s recent successes have been built around a revitalised fast‑bowling unit. In May 2024, the Tigers secured a Test series win over Pakistan at home, a result highlighted by the performance of 23‑year‑old right‑arm seamer Nahid Rana. According to ESPNcricinfo’s match summary, Rana claimed 11 wickets across the two Tests, while veteran Taskin Ahmed contributed six wickets in the same series.

Against Australia in June 2024, Rana opened the ODI series with figures of 4/41 on a Dhaka pitch deliberately prepared with extra grass to assist pace bowlers. His consistent ability to hit speeds of 145 km/h or higher has made him a genuine threat on the traditionally bouncy surfaces of South Africa’s Wanderers and SuperSport Park grounds.

These performances are part of a broader strategic shift. Bangladesh’s coaching staff have begun preparing their home decks to be less spin‑friendly, signalling intent to compete effectively in upcoming tours to Australia (July 2024), South Africa (November/December 2024) and the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Markram’s Perspective and Personal Reflections

Aiden Markram, who was named South African Men’s Player of the Year at the Cricket South Africa (CSA) awards ceremony in late May 2024, acknowledges the danger of complacency.

“Of course there are Australia and England, but look at the Bangladesh team, with the speed they have developed. They will not be pushovers at all.”

Despite the accolade, Markram admitted he felt his personal contributions could have been stronger.

“It’s weird, I personally didn’t feel like it was a great year. We did some great things as a team and that’s ultimately what you live for,” he said in a post‑award interview with IOL Sport.

He pointed to his match‑winning 136 in the second innings of the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord’s as a season highlight, alongside solid showings in the T20 World Cup and South Africa’s Test series victory in India.

Off the field, Markram became a father in June 2024, a life event he says has sharpened his focus on contributing to the Proteas’ long‑term goals.

“The 2027 World Cup is the big World Cup and hopefully the stars can unite for the white team.”

Upcoming Fixtures and Preparation for 2027 World Cup

The Proteas’ home summer features a dense calendar of high‑profile matches:

  • Two Tests against Bangladesh (starting 13 August 2024)
  • Three Tests versus Australia (first Test in South Africa since the 2018 “Sandpaper” series)
  • Three Tests versus England
  • Preparation matches for the 50‑over World Cup cycle

Markram, who is also one of eight South African men’s players contracted for England’s The Hundred tournament (beginning Tuesday), will captain the Manchester Super Giants while balancing his international commitments.

By confronting a variety of opponents — ranging from Bangladesh’s emerging pace attack to the established might of Australia and England — South Africa aims to build the cohesion and depth necessary for a strong showing at the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
