Ethiopia relies on Dangote fertilizer factory to improve food security

Aliko Dangote’s Visit to Ethiopia Boosts Fertilizer Investment Plans

During a weekend trip to Ethiopia, Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote met with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to discuss the next steps of a $2.5 billion agreement for a large‑scale urea fertilizer plant in the Somali region’s town of Gode. The meeting underscored both parties’ commitment to deepening industrial cooperation and advancing Ethiopia’s goal of domestic fertilizer self‑sufficiency.

The Urea Plant in Gode

The proposed facility is designed to produce 3 million tons of urea per year, a volume that would cover a substantial share of Ethiopia’s current fertilizer demand and enable exports to neighboring markets. According to the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture, the plant aligns with the country’s “strategic intervention” to improve food security by ensuring reliable, affordable nutrient supplies for smallholder farmers.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed described the venture as a win‑win, noting that Dangote’s track record of delivering large infrastructure projects gives the government confidence in the partnership’s long‑term value. He emphasized that the collaboration reflects a shared vision of transforming Ethiopia into a regional hub for agro‑industrial production.

Expanded Infrastructure Commitments

Beyond the urea plant, Dangote Group announced that its total investment pledge in Ethiopia has risen to more than $4 billion. The broader package includes several ancillary assets intended to support the fertilizer complex and stimulate local industry:

  • A 110‑kilometre pipeline to transport raw materials and finished product.
  • A 120‑megawatt power plant to provide reliable electricity for the facility and surrounding communities.
  • A polypropylene packaging line for bagging urea and other fertilizer grades.
  • A 2‑million‑ton NPK mixing plant to produce blended fertilizers tailored to Ethiopian soil conditions.

These components were outlined in a press release issued by Dangote Group following the meeting, which also noted that Ethiopia now ranks as the second‑largest destination for the conglomerate’s African investments, behind only Nigeria.

Strategic Implications for Food Security and Industrialization

Ethiopia’s reliance on imported fertilizers has historically limited yields for staple crops such as teff, maize, and wheat. By establishing a domestic urea source, the government aims to reduce vulnerability to global price shocks and supply chain disruptions. Analysts from the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) estimate that a steady supply of locally produced urea could increase cereal yields by up to 15 % in the regions served by the Gode plant.

Furthermore, the integrated power and logistics infrastructure is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, spur ancillary industries such as packaging and transport, and contribute to Ethiopia’s broader industrialization agenda outlined in the Home‑Grown Economic Reform program.

While the project remains subject to final feasibility studies and regulatory approvals, the recent high‑level dialogue signals strong political will and private‑sector enthusiasm. Stakeholders will monitor progress on environmental and social impact assessments, which are critical to ensuring that the plant operates sustainably and benefits local communities.
