Iranian National Team Departs Tijuana for Seattle Ahead of Egypt Clash

According to a statement released by the Iranian Football Federation (IFF) on Wednesday, the senior men’s squad left Tijuana, Mexico, and traveled to Seattle, Washington, in preparation for their final group‑stage match against Egypt. The move marks the first time the team has been permitted to cross from Mexican territory into the United States under the MD‑2 travel authorization designated for international athletes.

Details of the Departure

The IFF noted that the delegation, comprising players, coaching staff, and medical personnel, departed from the Estadio Caliente in Tijuana after a brief training camp held in the border city. The MD‑2 clearance, issued by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, allowed the squad to enter the United States without the usual visa processing delays that can affect international teams.

Travel logistics were coordinated jointly by the IFF, the Mexican Football Federation, and local authorities in both Tijuana and Seattle. A charter flight transported the group to Seattle‑Tacoma International Airport, where they were greeted by a small contingent of U.S.‑based Iranian supporters.

Fan Reaction and Cultural Exchange

As the team buses pulled away from the stadium, a mixed crowd of Iranian and Mexican fans gathered outside the venue to bid farewell. Supporters waved flags, shouted chants, and sought autographs from the players. The atmosphere was described by attendees as “moving” and “a testament to the growing camaraderie between the two nations through sport.”

Local Mexican media highlighted the event as an example of how football can foster cross‑border friendships, noting that several fans exchanged jerseys and shared meals before the departure.

Artist Yalda Sepahpour’s Tribute Jerseys

In conjunction with the send‑off, Iranian‑American artist Yalda Sepahpour unveiled a limited‑edition jersey design that blends elements of the Iranian and Mexican national kits. Sepahpour explained that the garment was created “to celebrate the support the team has received in Mexico and to encourage the players as they head out to face Egypt.”

Speaking to reporters, Sepahpour said:

“It’s about taking a moment to celebrate and say thank you and congratulations. They’re doing great things and Mexico welcomes them back. I’m wearing this shirt and everyone comes and gives me a high five and a fist bump and it’s very moving.”

The jerseys were made available for purchase at the stadium’s merchandise stand, with a portion of the proceeds earmarked for youth football programs in both Iran and Mexico.

Looking Ahead

The squad will now continue its preparations in Seattle, where it is scheduled to hold a final training session before traveling to the venue for the match against Egypt. Both teams have emphasized the importance of the encounter as a chance to build momentum for the latter stages of the tournament.
