Ghana: Akosombo power plant fully operational after fire at GRIDCo switchgear – Energy Minister

Date:

Akosombo Power Plant Fully Restored After Switchyard Fire

On May 1, 2026, Ghana’s Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, announced that all six generating units at the Akosombo Generating Station had been reconnected to the national grid and were operating at full capacity. The announcement followed a rapid restoration effort after a fire damaged the switchgear of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) substation in Akosombo.

What Happened

According to official reports, a fire broke out in the switchyard of the GRIDCo substation on April 30, 2026. The substation, which steps up voltage from the Akosombo plant before feeding electricity into the transmission network, suffered significant damage to its control room and associated equipment. As a protective measure, the Volta River Authority (VRA) disconnected the plant from the grid on April 23, 2026, leading to widespread power interruptions across several regions.

The Akosombo Generating Station, Ghana’s largest hydroelectric facility, normally contributes about 1,020 MW through its six turbines. The loss of this output strained the national supply, prompting immediate action from the energy sector.

Restoration Efforts

Following the incident, Dr. Jinapor and his deputy visited the site to assess the damage and pledge support. Engineers from GRIDCo, VRA, and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) formed a joint response team that worked around the clock to:

  • Isolate and safely de‑energize the burnt switchgear components.
  • Design and implement a temporary bypass route to reroute power from the plant’s generators directly to the transmission lines.
  • Re‑synchronize each of the six units with the grid, verifying frequency and voltage stability before full load was applied.

In a Facebook update on May 1, Dr. Jinapor praised the crews: “Faced with a serious system disruption and against all odds, our engineers, technicians and emergency response teams worked around the clock to restore power and stabilize the grid.” He added that the collective discipline and commitment of the workforce secured system stability.

Leadership Statements

President John Dramani Mahama addressed the nation during the May Day celebrations at Jackson Park, Koforidua, echoing the minister’s optimism. He recounted his personal visit to Akosombo the previous day, where he observed the damage and the improvised bypass solution:

“I know many of you are concerned about the power disruptions caused by the Akosombo fire, but I would like to share the good news that GRIDCo and VRA engineers together managed to bypass the burnt‑out control room and restart all six turbines at the Akosombo Power Plant.”

The President’s remarks underscored the government’s confidence in the technical capability of state‑owned utilities and highlighted the importance of transparent communication during crises.

Broader Impact and Acknowledgments

The restoration not only resumed the plant’s 1,020 MW output but also alleviated pressure on alternative generation sources that had been dispatched to cover the shortfall. Dr. Jinapor expressed gratitude to the leadership and staff of GRIDCo, VRA, ECG, and all supporting agencies whose coordination made the rapid recovery possible.

He concluded his message with a note of national pride: “This moment shows that even under pressure, Ghana can rely on the strength and skill of its people. May God bless our engineers, our energy sector and our nation.”

Looking Ahead

While the immediate crisis has been resolved, officials have signaled a review of substation fire‑protection standards and emergency response protocols to prevent similar incidents. Continuous investment in grid resilience, coupled with the expertise demonstrated by Ghana’s energy workforce, aims to ensure a stable power supply for the nation’s homes, industries, and essential services.
