Ghana: NEDCo deploys emergency response to address energy issues in Tamale

Northern Electricity Distribution Company Activates Emergency Measures in Tamale

The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) announced this week that it has launched emergency operations to address persistent power‑supply challenges affecting residents of Tamale and surrounding communities. The statement, issued by NEDCo’s Corporate Communications unit, said the utility “noted with concern” the difficulties faced by customers and had taken “strict remedial action” to stabilise the grid.

Immediate actions deployed

To improve reliability, NEDCo has rolled out a three‑pronged response:

  • Tripling the number of on‑call technical teams so that faults can be attended to more rapidly.
  • Expanding the customer‑service hotline from one to three dedicated lines, allowing more simultaneous calls and faster logging of complaints.
  • Feeding additional transformers into the distribution network to relieve stress on existing units that have been operating near capacity.

According to the utility, these steps are intended to reduce outage duration and frequency while longer‑term infrastructure upgrades are planned.

Community engagement and reporting

NEDCo urged residents to make use of the hotlines to report faults, vandalism, or irregularities. The company noted that timely customer feedback helps technical crews “resolve the concerns as quickly as possible.” In addition, the utility appealed to the public to refrain from tampering with power infrastructure, warning that such interference undermines efforts to maintain a stable supply.

“We remain your source for safe and reliable power,” the statement concluded, reinforcing NEDCo’s commitment to service quality.

Context and broader challenges

The announcement follows a series of reports from local media and consumer groups highlighting intermittent electricity in parts of the Northern Region, particularly during peak demand periods. While NEDCo did not disclose a timeline for when normal operations would be fully restored, the utility said it is monitoring the situation closely and will adjust resources as needed.
