Home Affairs expands Smart ID services to 203 bank branches and processes 250,000 applications

Smart ID Replacement Service Expands Across South Africa

What’s New?

The Department of Home Affairs has rolled out its Smart ID replacement service to 203 bank branches nationwide. This move is part of a larger digital‑transformation effort aimed at making government services easier to reach.

How the Service Grew

Before the banking partnership, people could replace their Smart ID at 248 Ministry of Interior offices and only 32 bank branches. Adding the 203 new branches boosted access by about 73 % in just three months.

Who’s Involved?

The participating banks are:

  • 109 Capitec branches
  • 74 Standard Bank branches
  • 20 FNB branches

How It Works

At any of these branches you can:

  • Walk in – no appointment needed.
  • Complete a fully biometric Smart ID application in about five minutes.
  • Skip paperwork entirely.

Why the Switch Matters

Around 16 million South Africans still use the old Green ID Book, which is more prone to fraud and identity theft. Replacing it with the Smart ID card helps:

  • Strengthen the national identity system.
  • Protect citizens from fraud.
  • Keep the population register accurate and secure.

What’s Next?

Home Affairs Minister Dr. Leon Schreiber says the service will grow to 750 bank branches by the end of the year. Future plans include:

  • First‑time Smart ID applications.
  • Passport applications.
  • Home‑delivery options for IDs and passports.

Conclusion

The rapid expansion of the Smart ID replacement service shows how partnerships between government and banks can make essential services faster, safer, and more convenient for everyone. If you still have a Green ID Book, now is a great time to upgrade to a Smart ID and enjoy better protection against identity theft and fraud.
