Why Special Votes Matter

With the election day set for 4 November, not everyone can make it to their polling station on that exact date. The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) offers special votes so that registered voters who face obstacles can still have their say.

Who Can Apply for a Special Vote?

Home‑Visit Voters

If you are unable to travel to your voting station because of a disability, illness, or mobility issue, you can request that IEC officials come to your home to collect your ballot.

Early‑Station Voters

If you can get to your voting station but will be unavailable on 4 November (for example, due to work, study, or a prior commitment), you may vote at your registered station on 2 or 3 November.

Out‑of‑District Voters

Registered voters who will be outside their voting district on election day because of essential work, medical appointments, or other qualifying reasons can also apply for a special vote.

When Will Special Votes Be Cast?

Approved special votes are collected on 2 and 3 November, ahead of the main election day. Home‑visit voters will have IEC officials arrive at the address they provided, while early‑station voters will go to their usual polling place on those dates.

The IEC released the final candidate list on 16 September after reviewing nominations. A total of 136,790 candidates cleared the requirements to run in eight metros, 44 district municipalities, and 205 local municipalities.
