IEC recorded 2.9 million voter registration transactions this weekend

South African Electoral Commission Reports Surge in Voter Registrations

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) announced that the most recent voter‑registration weekend yielded 2.9 million registration transactions, a notable increase from the 1.7 million recorded during the comparable weekend ahead of the 2021 local elections.

According to IEC Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo, the drive served two core purposes: adding new voters to the roll and allowing existing electors to verify or amend their details so they are assigned to the correct voting precinct.

Registration Weekend Results

After processing the weekend’s activity, the IEC reported that the total number of registered voters now stands at 28.5 million.

The breakdown of the 2.9 million transactions is as follows:

  • 477,174 first‑time registrations – representing 16 % of all activity.
  • 2.4 million voters who checked and updated their existing information – accounting for 84 % of the weekend’s work.

First‑time vs. Updated Registrations

The relatively high proportion of updates reflects the IEC’s ongoing effort to keep the voter roll accurate, especially important for local elections where voters must cast their ballots in the precinct where they are registered.

First‑time registrants, while a smaller share, indicate continued engagement among newly eligible citizens, including young adults turning 18 and naturalised residents.

Challenges and Outstanding Applications

The IEC noted that approximately 30,000 online registrations remain pending, primarily because of poor‑quality ID images uploaded by applicants.

Electoral Officer Mamabolo explained that IEC teams are reviewing these submissions and will contact affected voters if further information is required.

Future Plans and Access Improvements

To broaden participation, the IEC announced several initiatives:

  • The online voter‑registration portal will stay open until the 2026 local elections are officially proclaimed.
  • The portal will be zero‑rated, meaning eligible South Africans can register, update details, or verify their registration without incurring data charges.
  • A second registration weekend is scheduled for 1–2 August, offering additional in‑person opportunities at registration stations nationwide.

Mamabolo also acknowledged the role of political parties, community leaders, and prospective candidates in encouraging citizens to use both the online platform and physical registration points.

Context and Significance

Accurate voter rolls are essential for the credibility of South Africa’s electoral system. In local government elections, voters are legally required to vote at the station corresponding to their registered address; mismatches can lead to disenfranchisement.

The IEC’s transparent reporting—citing exact numbers, providing percentages, and outlining pending cases—aligns with best practices for electoral management and helps build public trust.
