IFP Demands Thorough Probe into Killing of Councillor Khethelo Mdluli
What Happened?
Councillor Khethelo Mdluli, a 40‑year‑old IFP ward candidate for uMlalazi Local Municipality, was shot in front of his children at his home in oPhindweni, Gingindlovu last Thursday evening. He passed away at Ngwelezane Hospital on Monday after succumbing to his injuries. Mdluli had been serving as an IFP PR councillor since 2021 and was running in the upcoming local government elections.
IFP’s Response
IFP spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa condemned the attack in the strongest terms, calling it “barbaric and senseless.” He urged the South African Police Service (SAPS) to treat the case with utmost urgency and to examine every possible motive, including whether the killing was politically motivated ahead of the elections.
Political Violence Concerns
Hlengwa stressed that political violence has no place in South Africa’s democracy. He noted that no public representative, candidate, activist, or ordinary citizen should fear for their life simply because they choose to serve their community or exercise democratic rights.
