Match Summary

On Sunday, May 12 2024, world No. 1 Jannik Sinner defeated Norway’s Casper Ruud 6‑4, 6‑4 in the final of the Italian Open held at the Foro Italico in Rome. The victory gave Sinner his fifth ATP 1000 title of the season and completed a career‑wide “Golden Masters” – winning each of the nine different ATP Masters 1000 tournaments at least once.

Ruud opened the match strongly, breaking Sinner’s serve twice to lead 2‑0 in the first set. Sinner responded immediately, levelling the set at 4‑4 with a sharp backhand that forced a break point. A hurried forehand from Ruud landed long, allowing Sinner to hold serve and take a 5‑4 lead. He closed the set with a service hold to win it 6‑4.

In the second set, Sinner broke Ruud’s serve in the opening game and maintained his advantage, holding his own serve to extend the lead to 5‑4. A powerful forehand down the line sealed the match, leaving Ruud to watch from the baseline as Sinner lifted the trophy.

“It’s a historic day because we won the doubles and the singles,” Sinner told the singing, chanting crowd at the Foro Italico.

“Last year Jasmine Paolini won [women’s] Singles and doubles…we’re keeping the momentum going.”

Doubles Success for Italy

Earlier on the same day, the Italian duo of Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori captured the men’s doubles title, defeating Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos 7‑6(8), 6‑7(3), 10‑3. Their triumph marked the first Italian men’s doubles victory in Rome since 1958, ending a 66‑year drought.

The combined singles and doubles wins sparked celebrations across the Italian tennis community, with fans chanting “Forza Italia!” throughout the stadium.
