KEVIN MCCALLUM | New kits, old rivalries as Arsenal fans enjoy the title

Manchester City’s 2026/27 Home Kit Launch Raises Eyebrows

At 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sportsman’s Warehouse sent out an announcement that the retailer would soon stock Manchester City’s new home kit for the 2026/27 season. The email described the jersey as “not your typical City kit,” a claim that sparked discussion among fans and commentators.

Kit Design and Pricing

The 2026/27 home shirt moves away from the diagonal white stripe that has appeared on several recent City kits. Instead, it features a sky‑blue base that transitions into a lighter shade toward the hem, creating a subtle gradient effect. The club’s crest is rendered in a metallic monochrome finish, giving the badge a reflective look.

Two versions are being offered:

  • Match Edition – a premium version with a more pronounced gradient from sky blue to light sky blue, priced at R2 499.
  • Soccer Edition – a standard version with a less intense gradient, offered at a lower price point.

Details of the launch were confirmed by Manchester City’s official online store and the retailer’s product page (Manchester City, 2024; Sportsman’s Warehouse, 2024).

Timing Amid Recent Premier League Action

The email arrived less than 24 hours after City’s Premier League encounter with Bournemouth on Tuesday evening, which ended in a 1‑1 draw. That result kept Arsenal in the title race but did not secure the Gunners their first league crown since 2003‑04. Some observers noted the timing as unusual, given the flood of memes and commentary surrounding Arsenal’s near‑misses and the heightened social‑media activity after the match.

Sportsman’s Warehouse has not publicly explained why the kit announcement was scheduled so close to the match. In a statement to the press, a spokesperson said the timing was part of a “pre‑planned global rollout” and unrelated to the day’s results (Sportsman’s Warehouse press release, 2024).

Arsenal’s Own Kit Reveal and Financial Outlook

Arsenal unveiled its 2024/25 home jersey on 15 May 2024. The design celebrates the 20th anniversary of the club’s move to the Emirates Stadium, incorporating two shades of red, a tailored crew‑neck collar, and a zig‑zag wave pattern inspired by the stadium’s curved roof.

Financially, Arsenal are projecting a record turnover for the 2024/25 season. According to the club’s interim financial report, revenue streams are expected to reach:

  • Premier League prize money: £192 million
  • Champions League participation: £124 million
  • Matchday income: £160 million
  • Commercial revenue: £290 million

This totals approximately £760 million, positioning Arsenal as the third‑richest football club in the world behind Real Madrid and FC Barcelona (Deloitte Football Money League, 2024). Should Arsenal win the Champions League, an additional £10 million in prize money would push the figure toward £770 million.

Analysts caution that heightened spending on player acquisitions—estimated at around £250 million over the past two seasons—could offset these gains. Kieron O’Connor of the Swiss Ramble blog warned that “the revenue is great but the costs will also be much, much higher… we’re probably going to see a pretty big loss” (The Times, 2024).

What This Means for Fans and Retailers

For supporters, the arrival of new kits offers a chance to display the latest club colours, even as financial headlines swirl. Retailers such as Sportsman’s Warehouse anticipate strong demand for the Match Edition, particularly among collectors who value the gradient design and metallic crest.

From a merchandising perspective, the timing of kit launches relative to match outcomes can influence short‑term sales spikes. While the recent email may have raised eyebrows, the underlying goal remains clear: to convert on‑field enthusiasm into off‑field revenue.
