On Wednesday afternoon, a minibus taxi carrying schoolchildren caught fire on a gravel road near Masemola in Limpopo. The vehicle was transporting learners from Mannyetha Primary School back to their homes when flames erupted, leading to a tragic loss of life and several injuries.

According to Colonel Malesela Ledwaba of the Limpopo police, the minibus—a Toyota Quantum—was overloaded with about 22 children aged seven to ten, plus the driver. The bus caught fire while traveling on the gravel road.

Two learners, both in Class R at Mannyetha Primary School, died in the blaze.

Injuries

Seven other children sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment. Thirteen children escaped without harm.

Police have opened two counts of manslaughter against the driver. Additional charges include violations of the National Road Traffic Act for overloading and failing to produce a valid operating certificate.

Court Appearance

The suspect, 44‑year‑old taxi driver Mogau Mosehla, appeared before the Nebo District Court on Friday. He was remanded in custody and will await a formal bail application scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
