Operation Prosper Cracks Down on Gang Violence in Western Cape
Arrests and Impact
Deputy President Paul Mashatile told Parliament that Operation Prosper has led to 672 arrests since April this year. The operation focuses on the Cape Flats and nearby areas. In 11 police station areas, murder numbers have gone down, while drug recoveries have risen in 12 stations.

On May 27, Mashatile visited Mitchells Plain and other parts of the Cape Flats after MPs raised concerns about ongoing killings. He met families, community members, and law‑enforcement leaders to see how the joint effort between the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is working.
Challenges in Prosecutions
MPs pointed out that many gang‑related cases end with low conviction rates. Weak investigations and prosecutions, plus witnesses who fear retaliation, make it hard to secure guilty verdicts. Mashatile agreed that these issues are major obstacles in the fight against crime.
Strengthening Witness Protection
To tackle witness reluctance, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development is leading work on better whistle‑blower and witness‑protection systems. New legislation aims to give the minister the resources needed to protect people who come forward with information.
Court Safety Measures
Violence inside court buildings has also been a worry. The government is looking at stronger access controls, such as scanners at entrances to detect weapons, so courts can stay safe places where justice can happen without intimidation.
Police Resources and K9 Units
Some MPs questioned whether SAPS has enough dogs and other resources for anti‑gang work. Mashatile said there is no policy blocking the purchase of needed equipment. If more police dogs are required, SAPS should acquire them, and any procurement problems will be investigated and fixed.
