Aubrey Modiba’s Road from Injury to World Cup Contender
When Bafana Bafana midfielder Aubrey Modiba left the pitch with a hamstring strain during the first leg of the CAF Champions League clash against AS FAR in Pretoria, the immediate concern was whether he would miss the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup squad announcement.
The injury occurred a few weeks before head coach Hugo Broos was set to finalize the national team roster. Modiba admitted that the thought of being omitted crossed his mind.
“It occurred to me [that I may not play at the World Cup]…,” Modiba said after helping South Africa secure a win over South Korea in Monterrey.
Rehabilitation and Return to Fitness
Modiba missed the second leg in Rabat, where AS FAR claimed their second CAF Champions League title, and also sat out Bafana’s warm‑up friendly against Nicaragua. Nevertheless, the medical staff at Mamelodi Sundowns’ Chloorkop facility and the Bafana camp implemented a structured rehab programme.
Thanks to that effort, Modiba was fit enough to feature in all three of South Africa’s group‑stage matches at the tournament:
- vs. Mexico – 1‑0 win
- vs. Czech Republic – 2‑1 win
- vs. South Korea – 1‑0 win (the match in which he earned his 50th cap)
He noted that while he was not at peak fitness at the tournament’s start, his confidence grew with each appearance.
“I wasn’t 100 % at the start of the tournament but as the tournament progresses I’m getting better and better,” Modiba explained.
Role in the Defensive Unit
Modiba operates as a versatile midfielder who often drops into a defensive role, providing cover alongside centre‑backs Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Ime Okon and Khuliso Mudau. His ability to read the game and break up opposition attacks has been highlighted by the coaching staff as a key asset for the team’s shape.
The upcoming round‑of‑16 fixture against Canada in Los Angeles will test this unit further. Modiba expressed respect for the opponent while emphasizing the team’s belief in collective effort.
“They did well and at this level you can’t take any team for granted, but we will watch their games… we will prepare accordingly for this game.”
Leadership, Accountability and Team Culture
As part of Bafana’s senior leadership group, Modiba stresses internal accountability.
“If we fight together, we can take on any team in the world… We hold each other accountable when we don’t perform.”
The squad’s unity is evident in their pre‑match rituals, including group singing and shared tactical discussions, which Modiba cites as sources of resilience when facing adversity.
Personal Milestone: 50 International Caps
During the victory over South Korea, Modiba reached the milestone of 50 caps for South Africa—a fact he only realized after the match.
“To be honest, I didn’t even know it was my 50th international match. I’m happy to be able to win a game to mark a personal milestone…”
Looking Forward
Modiba remains focused on the next challenge, acknowledging that external criticism does not affect the team’s mindset.
“We know people are always talking and criticizing… We know what we can do because we’ve been together for so many years.”
With the medical team’s support, the coach’s trust, and a cohesive squad, Modiba aims to help Bafana Bafana advance past Canada and continue their historic World Cup run.
