MTN Nigeria to stop renting airtime as new laws come into effect

MTN Nigeria Suspends Xtratime Airtime Advance Service Amid New Digital Lending Rules

MTN Nigeria has announced a temporary suspension of its “Xtratime” airtime and data credit prepayment service. The move comes as the operator works to align its operations with the Digital, Electronic, Online or Non‑Traditional Consumer Lending Regulations, 2025, which took effect on 12 April 2025.

Xtratime allows customers with low or zero airtime balances to receive a small advance that is automatically deducted when the account is topped up. The product has been described by MTN as a lifeline for users facing financial pressure but who still need to stay connected.

Why the Service Matters to Customers

For many Nigerians, especially those in informal employment or with irregular income streams, the ability to borrow a few minutes of talk time or a few megabytes of data can be the difference between staying in touch with family, accessing mobile banking, or receiving urgent health information.

  • Xtratime provides instant, no‑collateral credit that is repaid automatically at the next top‑up.
  • The service is particularly popular among low‑income prepaid users who may not qualify for traditional bank loans.
  • In South Africa, where MTN also offers the product, similar advances have accounted for roughly half of all prepaid top‑ups, according to Vodacom’s 2025 fintech report.

Regulatory Background and Compliance Steps

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) expanded its supervision of digital lending to include telecommunications companies and other short‑term loan providers under the new 2025 regulations. Companies offering products like Xtratime must now:

  • Register as digital lenders with the FCCPC.
  • Obtain a specific licence for non‑traditional consumer lending activities.
  • Implement transparent disclosure of fees, interest rates, and repayment terms.
  • Adhere to caps on loan amounts and interest rates designed to protect consumers from over‑indebtedness.

MTN Nigeria said the suspension is a precautionary measure while it completes the required registration and licensing process. The operator emphasized that it is working closely with regulators to ensure full compliance before reinstating the service.

Financial Outlook and Industry Comparison

Despite the pause, MTN Nigeria expects the impact on its overall financial performance to be limited. In a statement, the company noted:

“Given the size of Xtratime in MTN Nigeria’s overall revenue mix, we do not expect the temporary suspension to have a material impact on the financial performance of MTN.”

The firm added that it will disclose any quantified effect on earnings in its first‑quarter 2025 results.

Industry peers provide a useful benchmark. Vodacom reported that its Airtime Advance product facilitated 1.7 billion advances across its operations in the 12 months to March 2025, contributing significantly to its fintech growth. For Vodacom, microloans such as airtime advances account for about half of total prepaid top‑ups in South Africa.

Analysts suggest that while regulatory compliance may add short‑term operational costs, the long‑term benefit lies in increased consumer trust and a clearer legal framework for digital lending services across Africa’s telecom sector.

MTN Nigeria reassured customers that they can continue to purchase airtime and data through existing channels such as USSD, the MTN app, and authorized retail outlets during the suspension period.
