Nigeria’s crude oil production hit a five-month high of 1.73 million barrels per day in May

Date:

NNPC Limited Reports Mixed Results for May 2026

According to NNPC Limited’s monthly operational report released on July 1, 2026, Nigeria’s crude oil and condensate output rose modestly in May, while gas production reached a 12‑month high. The report highlights both progress in asset reliability and ongoing operational headwinds that tempered overall performance.

Crude Oil and Condensate Production

Crude oil and condensate production averaged 1.73 million barrels per day (mbpd) in May 2026, up from 1.68 mbpd in April – an increase of roughly 3 % [1]. NNPC attributed the gain to improved asset reliability and higher availability across its upstream portfolio.

Nevertheless, several constraints limited the upside:

  • Sub‑optimal drilling performance at the TEPNG asset
  • Reservoir pressure challenges at the Bonga field
  • Planned production cuts at Nembe
  • Maintenance activities at the Stardeep Agbami facility

These factors illustrate the delicate balance between operational improvements and field‑specific issues that continue to shape Nigeria’s oil output.

Gas Production and Sales

Gas production hit a 12‑month high of 7,774 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d) in May, reflecting successful ramp‑up of associated gas handling and new compression capacity [1]. However, gas sales slipped slightly from 5,044 mmscf/d in April to 4,921 mmscf/d in May, a decline of about 2.4 %. The dip was linked to temporary downstream demand fluctuations and scheduled maintenance on certain gas‑processing trains.

Financial Highlights

NNPC Limited posted a profit after tax of N462 billion for May 2026, while total revenue reached N4.335 trillion [1]. Between January and May, statutory transfers to the Federal Government amounted to N4.858 trillion, underscoring the corporation’s continued role as a major fiscal contributor.

Infrastructure Progress

The report highlights steady advancement on key gas‑transport projects:

  • The Obiafu‑Obrikom‑Oben (OB3) gas pipeline is now 97 % complete, with the Niger River crossing having undergone successful disengagement operations. Pre‑commissioning and interconnection work are expected to enable full commissioning by the end of Q3 2026.
  • The Ajaokuta‑Kaduna‑Kano (AKK) gas pipeline stands at 94 % completion. Ongoing mainline construction, installation, and pre‑commissioning activities aim to support early gas delivery to Abuja in 2026.

Upstream pipeline availability remained strong at 98 %, indicating reliable transport of hydrocarbons from production sites to processing facilities.

Retail Fuel Availability

Retail performance showed mixed results. Availability of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) across NNPC’s retail network averaged 57 % in May, reflecting persistent supply‑chain constraints and localized distribution challenges. The company noted ongoing efforts to improve stock levels through optimized logistics and enhanced partnership arrangements with marketers.

Context and Outlook

NNPC’s May 2026 results illustrate a pattern of incremental production gains tempered by technical and operational hurdles. The rise in crude output aligns with broader industry trends of modest recovery following recent investment in asset integrity programs, while the gas production milestone underscores Nigeria’s strategic focus on monetizing associated gas.

Looking ahead, the successful completion of the OB3 and AKK pipelines will be critical for unlocking domestic gas markets and reducing reliance on imported petroleum products. Continued attention to drilling efficiency, reservoir management, and retail supply chains will be essential to translate upstream gains into sustained revenue growth and improved consumer fuel availability.
