Africa Travel Indaba 2026: Showcasing the Continent

What is the Africa Travel Indaba?

The Africa Travel Indaba is a major tourism event that brings together travelers, businesses, and leaders from across the continent and the world. Its goal is to put Africa on the global map, attract more visitors, and highlight what the continent has to offer.

When and Where?

Minister Patricia de Lille announced that the 2026 edition will take place at the Durban International Convention Center from May 11 to May 14. The event is part of Africa Month celebrations, which happen every May.

Why the Indaba Matters

According to the minister, the Indaba helps:

  • Showcase Africa’s beauty and diverse cultures
  • Encourage more tourists to visit the continent
  • Celebrate Africa Month with a focus on unity and pride

Addressing Protests and Promoting Tolerance

South Africa has seen protests against illegal immigration, especially in KwaZulu‑Natal, the host province. Minister de Lille urged everyone to be tolerant:

“We have seen the marches and I simply appeal to South Africans and our African brothers and sisters: let us be tolerant of one another.”

She noted that the African continent has been part of Durban’s story for 30 years and that the Indaba’s value lies in showing that beauty and the people behind it.

The minister hopes the International Relations Department and police will manage the situation as they have done for the past three decades.

Tourism Numbers and Legal Travel

De Lille highlighted that about 70% of travelers coming to South Africa are from other African countries. She stressed that these visitors arrive legally:

  • They have visas
  • They enter through airports and border posts
  • South Africa is grateful for their support

Looking Ahead: Tourism Fairs Across Africa

In the future, South Africa plans to take part in tourism fairs throughout the continent to strengthen travel and trade with neighboring nations.

Tackling Xenophobia

Given the overall perception of xenophobia, the minister said the Cabinet must clarify South Africa’s official stance. She emphasized:

  • The right to peaceful protest is protected by the constitution
  • The government must listen to protesters’ grievances
  • Solutions should be found so everyone can live together peacefully

Youth Jobs and Sustainability Village

Creating Opportunities for Young People

The minister pointed out that tourism can absorb many semi‑skilled, unskilled, and university graduates. To fight youth unemployment, the government is working with the private sector and other agencies to bring more young people into the tourism sector.

Sustainability Village

At the Indaba, a sustainability village will feature more than 400 small and medium‑sized enterprises (SMEs). These businesses will:

  • Showcase their products to a global audience
  • Gain market access
  • Grow and create more jobs

Conclusion

Africa Travel Indaba 2026 is more than a tourism fair—it’s a platform to celebrate the continent’s beauty, promote tolerance, address social challenges, and create jobs for the next generation. By welcoming delegates from around the world and highlighting legal, sustainable travel, South Africa aims to show that Africa is open, welcoming, and full of opportunity.
