Pope Leo inaugurates Barcelona’s famous Sagrada Familia tower

Date:

Pope Leo to Bless Sagrada Família’s New Tower

A Special Day for Barcelona

On June 10, Pope Leo will travel to Barcelona to preside over a solemn mass and bless the newly finished central tower of the Sagrada Família basilica. The ceremony marks the 100‑year anniversary of the death of Antoni Gaudí, the visionary architect who dreamed up this iconic church.

What’s Happening?

The Inauguration Mass

The Pope will lead a special Mass inside the basilica. After the service, he will officially inaugurate and bless the tower that now reaches the basilica’s full height.

Why the Tower Matters

The central tower, often called the “Tower of Jesus,” is the tallest part of the Sagrada Família. When its final piece was put in place last February, the building soared to 172.5 meters (about 566 feet). That height makes it the tallest church in the world, surpassing the famous spire of Ulm Minster in Germany.

A Quick Look at the Basilica’s History

From Humble Beginnings

Construction started in 1882 under architect Francisco de Paula del Villar. Gaudí took over the project a year later and devoted the rest of his life to it, blending Gothic and Art Nouveau styles with his own imaginative forms.

Gaudí’s Legacy

When Gaudí died in 1926 after being struck by a tram, only one tower of the basilica was complete. He left behind detailed models and drawings, hoping future generations would finish his work.

What’s Next for the Sagrada Família?

Ongoing Construction

Even with the central tower finished, artisans and engineers are still working on façades, interior decorations, and smaller towers. The current goal is to wrap up the main structure by around 2034, though some decorative details may take a bit longer.

Honoring Gaudí’s Vision

The upcoming celebrations—including the Pope’s visit—are part of a broader program to highlight Gaudí’s artistic genius and deep spirituality. Exhibits, lectures, and concerts will run throughout the year in Barcelona and beyond.

Pope Leo’s Spanish Trip

After the Sagrada Família ceremony, Pope Leo will continue his journey to Madrid and the Canary Islands, where he will meet with local communities, celebrate Mass, and discuss topics such as youth outreach and environmental care.

Why This Matters to Teens

Whether you’re interested in architecture, history, art, or faith, the Sagrada Família shows how a single person’s imagination can inspire a project that spans centuries. Seeing the Pope bless the newest tower connects past and present, reminding us that big dreams—like Gaudí’s—can still be realized today.
