Popular KZN sangoma arrested for orchestrating murder of ANCYL member and two metro officers

Date:

Traditional Healer Arrested for Plot Against ANC Youth League Member and Police Officers

What Happened?

In July 2026, police arrested a well‑known traditional healer from KwaMashu, KwaZulu‑Natal. He is accused of planning the killings of an ANC Youth League member and two eThekwini Metro police officers back in 2020.

The Victims

  • Thamsanqa Kingdom Gcabashe – ANCYL member, shot outside his home in Section G, Mpumalanga Township in May 2020.
  • Lindokuhle Madonsela – Metro police officer, killed in June 2020.
  • Ndumiso Thosesi – Metro police officer, also killed in June 2020.

How the Plot Unfolded

Initial Target

Investigators say the healer became convinced that Officer Madonsela was having an affair with his wife. He allegedly decided to have Madonsela killed.

First Mistake

The hitmen sent to kill Madonsela mistakenly shot Gcabashe instead, outside his house in May 2020.

Second Attempt

After the error, the group regrouped. Two weeks later, in June 2020, they ambushed Madonsela and Thosesi while the officers were reporting for duty. Both officers were killed at the scene.

Police Investigation

Task Force Involved

The KZN Political Killings Task Force led the inquiry. They linked the two shootings using ballistic evidence – the same bullets and gun markings were found at both crime scenes.

Key Evidence

  • Ballistic reports showing identical weapon use.
  • Witness statements and phone records tying the suspects together.
  • Forensic analysis linking the healer to the planning stages.

Arrests and Charges

Who Was Arrested?

Five individuals have already been charged:

  1. Fana Shabalala
  2. Zamokuhle Nyandu
  3. Mthokozisi Ntando Blose
  4. Holy Shozi
  5. Sandile Msezane

They face charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

The Alleged Mastermind

The traditional healer, believed to be the mastermind, is set to appear for the first time at Hammarsdale Local Court on Monday, July 27, 2026.

Court Proceedings

The case against the five previously arrested suspects has been postponed for a pre‑trial hearing in the Durban High Court. The healer’s hearing will determine whether there is enough evidence to move forward to trial.

Conclusion

This case shows how a personal grudge can lead to tragic violence. Thanks to careful police work, ballistic evidence, and cooperation between different units, authorities have identified those responsible. The upcoming court hearings will bring more clarity and hopefully provide justice for the victims and their families.
