SAPS warns against misinformation as search for two-year-old omphile Sethole intensifies

Date:

Background

Limpopo Police are actively searching for two‑year‑old Omphile Sethole, who was taken from her home on the night of Saturday, May 2. The case has drawn widespread attention, and authorities are asking the community to stay alert while avoiding the spread of unverified rumors.

What Happened

According to Provincial Police Spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, Omphile’s 52‑year‑old grandmother woke up around 2 a.m. to use the toilet and took the toddler with her before returning to bed. When the grandmother awoke again at about 6 a.m., the child was gone and the bedroom window was open.

At the time of her disappearance, Omphile was wearing a pink leotard and black tights. Family members and neighbours began an immediate search of the surrounding area but did not locate her.

Police Response

Investigation Details

Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. Officers are interviewing witnesses, reviewing CCTV footage, and combing through nearby homes and fields.

Anyone with information about Omphile’s whereabouts should contact:

Warning Against Misinformation

Commissioner Hadebe has expressed concern over false claims circulating on social media that Omphile has been found dead. She stressed that these reports are untrue and that spreading them:

  • Creates unnecessary panic
  • Diverts public attention from genuine leads
  • Adds stress to the grieving family
  • May constitute a criminal offense

She urged all citizens to refrain from sharing unverified information and to rely only on official police updates.

How the Public Can Help

Police are asking community members to:

  1. Remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
  2. Check homes, gardens, and abandoned buildings in the vicinity.
  3. Share only confirmed details from police channels.
  4. Encourage friends and family to do the same.

Every piece of credible information could be crucial in bringing Omphile safely home.

Conclusion

The search for Omphile Sethole continues, with law‑enforcement teams working tirelessly to locate the missing toddler. While the community’s support is vital, it is equally important to avoid spreading rumors that could hinder the investigation. By staying informed through official sources and providing any credible tips, the public can play a key role in helping Omphile return to her family.
