Somali Referee Omar Artan Selected for UEFA Super Cup After US Travel Controversy
European football’s governing body UEFA announced on Thursday that Somali referee Omar Artan will officiate the 2024 UEFA Super Cup match between Champions League winners Paris Saint‑Germain and Europa League winners Aston Villa. The game is scheduled for 12 August in Salzburg, Austria.
Background and the U.S. Travel Incident
Artan, a 34‑year‑old referee widely regarded as Africa’s best in the 2023‑24 season, had been appointed by FIFA to work at the 2022 Men’s World Cup in Qatar. Upon attempting to travel to the United States for a pre‑tournament camp, he was denied entry at Miami International Airport and subjected to an 11‑hour interrogation by U.S. customs officials. The authorities alleged links to terrorist organisations but presented no evidence to support the claim.
After the interrogation, Artan was placed on a return flight to Turkey. He arrived in Somalia on Wednesday, where he received a hero’s welcome from fans and officials alike.
UEFA’s Decision and Statements
UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin highlighted the symbolic importance of the appointment:
“Football is meant to connect people and UEFA would like to show its respect for Omar and his outstanding leadership qualities.”
The decision followed close collaboration between UEFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF). CAF President Patrice Motsepe, who also serves as a FIFA vice‑president, welcomed the move:
“Omar Artan has made Somalia and the entire population of the African continent extremely proud. This is a great honour for Omar Artan and the African referees and is also an excellent example of how football brings together and unites people from Africa, Europe and around the world.”
Reactions from the Football Community
The appointment drew praise from several quarters:
- FIFA President Gianni Infantino acknowledged the limits of football’s governing bodies in influencing national immigration policies, stating, “we must respect that we are not the kings of the world who can rule over governments and police forces.” (FIFA press conference, August 2024)
- The United Nations’ top human rights official criticised the U.S. treatment of Artan, calling it a concerning example of immigration policies that affect major sporting events.
- African referees’ unions highlighted the selection as a milestone for representation on the global stage.
Context: The 2024 UEFA Super Cup
The UEFA Super Cup pits the winners of the UEFA Champions League against the victors of the UEFA Europa League. For the 2024 edition, Paris Saint‑Germain earned their place by winning the Champions League, while Aston Villa qualified after capturing the Europa League. The match will be held at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, a venue that has hosted several UEFA finals in recent years.
Artan’s involvement marks the first time a Somali referee has been appointed to oversee a UEFA Super Cup fixture, underscoring UEFA’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in its officiating ranks.
As the football world looks ahead to the August showpiece, Omar Artan’s story serves as a reminder of both the challenges faced by officials navigating international travel and the unifying power of the sport when governing bodies choose to recognise merit over controversy.
