South African ministers express outrage over killings of tourists in Kruger National Park

Date:

Ministers Offer Condolences After Tragic Deaths in Kruger National Park

The Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment have shared their sympathy for a South African couple whose bodies were found near a river in the Pafuri area of Kruger National Park.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille Speaks Out

Patricia de Lille said the safety of every traveler is a top priority for the tourism sector. She sent her thoughts and prayers to the families and friends of the victims and reminded everyone that the industry is working closely with police and other partners to improve security for tourists across the country.

She also asked anyone with information about the case to contact the police, who have opened an investigation.

Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Minister Willie Aucamp Reacts

Willie Aucamp described the killings as shocking and unprecedented, stressing that such violence should never happen in South Africa or inside Kruger National Park.

Aucamp said he met with the heads of South African National Parks (SANParks) to make sure the victims’ family receives support and that authorities are fully cooperating with the police probe.

What the Investigation Has Revealed So Far

SANParks reported that the couple’s bodies were discovered on Friday, May 22. The park called this the first incident of its kind in its 100‑year history.

Family members told officials that the pair were regular visitors who always followed park rules and would never knowingly put themselves in danger by parking in a restricted zone.

Security Camera Evidence

Footage from the park’s entrance gates showed that the couple’s vehicle never left through any of the nine access gates or the two international border posts leading into Mozambique.

Tire Tracks Near the Scene

Rangers found tire tracks close to where the bodies were found, indicating a vehicle had driven through the bush, crossed a fence, and headed toward Mozambique. Authorities cautioned that it is not yet confirmed whether those tracks belong to the missing vehicle.

SANParks Increases Security Measures

While the South African Police Service leads the investigation, SANParks has announced extra safety steps in the Nxanatseni North region of the park. These include:

  • Deploying more rangers and surveillance teams in high‑risk zones.
  • Upgrading early‑warning technology and monitoring systems.

The park noted that its existing technology already helped identify the vehicle linked to the tourists and that it will keep investing in modern tools to fight poaching, illegal activities, and to protect visitors.

Park’s Commitment to Safety

Despite the tragedy, SANParks stressed that Kruger National Park remains a safe place for tourists and staff. The reserve, which covers more than two million hectares, has extensive safety protocols in place.

The organization promised to keep supporting the police investigation, share verified information when possible, and continue protecting visitors, employees, and wildlife.

Out of respect for the victims’ family and to preserve the integrity of the investigation, SANParks said it will not make any further comments at this time.

Conclusion

The loss of two tourists in Kruger National Park has prompted strong reactions from both the tourism and environment ministries. While officials mourn the victims and promise support to their families, they are also tightening security and using technology to prevent similar incidents. The park remains committed to keeping its landscapes safe for everyone who comes to experience its natural beauty.
