France’s composure secures World Cup quarterfinal win over Morocco

France advanced to the World Cup semifinals after a 2‑0 victory over Morocco in Doha, despite Kylian Mbappé’s missed penalty in the 28th minute. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou parried the spot‑kick, but Les Bleus remained unshaken, pressing forward and creating several chances before halftime.
Deschamps on Mbappé’s miss and the team’s mindset
Didier Deschamps praised the squad’s patience after the match, noting that the team never doubted its ability to progress.
“We lacked efficiency and we had that penalty saved in the first half, several chances, but there was never any doubt, especially about Kylian.”
Deschamps added that France “suffocated” Morocco, forcing the opponents to run tirelessly until fatigue set in. The second goal came from Ousmane Dembélé, who capitalised on the space created by Mbappé, Michael Olise and Désiré Doué.
Historical context and Deschamps’ tenure
Since taking charge in 2012, Deschamps has guided France to the semifinals of a major tournament five times out of seven attempts, missing only the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2020 (held in 2021). He stressed that success rests on the quality of the players.
“Having good players is fundamental… A team’s success comes from its players, although I also have to do a few things right.”
He highlighted the impact of younger talents such as Warren Zaire‑Emery, who made his first appearance in the match and contributed significantly off the bench.
Looking ahead: semifinal and Bastille Day symbolism
France will face either Spain or Belgium in the semifinal, scheduled for July 14 — Bastille Day. Deschamps reminded the squad to stay grounded despite the heightened expectations.
“In 2018, no one expected us to be successful. In 2022 we were defending champions and very often the defending champions are eliminated in the round of 16. This time everyone expected us [to win] before the first ball of the tournament. But my players are used to it and don’t get carried away. At the moment we’re not looking beyond July 14th.”
The victory keeps France on course for a third consecutive final appearance, following their 2018 triumph and the heartbreaking loss in 2022.
