The Democratic Republic of Congo’s Bunia airport is reopening after a sharp drop in the number of suspected Ebola cases

Bunia Airport Reopens as Ebola Cases Decline in Ituri Province

After weeks of suspension, flights have resumed at Bunia Airport in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ituri province, the area that served as the epicenter of the nation’s recent Ebola outbreak. The decision follows a notable drop in suspected infections reported by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Situation Improves According to WHO Data

WHO’s latest situation report indicated that the number of suspected Ebola cases fell from 906 at the end of the previous week to 116, signaling a significant reduction in transmission risk. As of Tuesday, provincial health authorities recorded 321 confirmed cases and 48 deaths in Ituri.

These figures prompted Congo’s transport ministry to conclude that “the conditions for a gradual and safe resumption of flights are now in place.” The ministry’s assessment was based on ongoing surveillance, contact tracing, and the implementation of stringent infection‑control protocols at the airport.

Health and Safety Measures Enforced for Travelers

To safeguard passengers and crew, airport authorities and airlines have introduced a series of preventive steps:

  • Mandatory face‑mask distribution for every traveler before boarding.
  • Hand‑washing stations equipped with soap and alcohol‑based sanitizer at entry and exit points.
  • Temperature screening using non‑contact thermometers for all individuals entering the terminal.
  • Enhanced cleaning of high‑touch surfaces, including check‑in counters, boarding gates, and aircraft interiors.
  • Clear signage reminding travelers of respiratory hygiene and physical distancing where feasible.

Pilot Isaac Owuma, who operates flights between Bunia and Kinshasa, emphasized that these measures are applied consistently: “We give every passenger a face mask, conduct handwashing and temperature checks both when boarding and disembarking, and ensure the cabin is disinfected after each leg.”

Passengers Express Relief and Cautious Optimism

Travelers welcomed the reopening as a step toward normalcy after months of reliance on risky overland routes. Jenny Avuchi, who buried her eldest brother during the outbreak, shared her experience:

“Burying my eldest brother was a whole ordeal for us as we are not used to traveling by road and experiencing all the uncertainty. We had no choice but to wait a little longer for the airport to reopen and suddenly the airport opened and we are really very happy and very satisfied.”

Another passenger, who preferred to remain anonymous, noted the dual burden of disease and travel restrictions:

“It was another burden and source of pressure for us: on the one hand the epidemic and on the other hand the complete closure of the airport. This reopening is a relief and gives us reassurance that the epidemic is being closely monitored and that we are safe at the airport too.”

Authorities Maintain Vigilance Amid Reopening

While the resumption of air traffic signals progress, officials stress that vigilance remains essential. The Congolese Ministry of Health, in coordination with WHO, continues to run active surveillance teams, conduct rapid diagnostic testing, and maintain isolation units for any suspected cases.

A public communications campaign has been launched to reinforce messages about hygiene, early symptom reporting, and the importance of adhering to airport health protocols. Authorities reiterate that the situation is “under control” but caution that any lapse in preventive actions could jeopardize the gains achieved.

Looking Forward

The reopening of Bunia Airport not only restores a vital link for commerce and humanitarian aid but also offers a tangible indicator of improving public‑health conditions in Ituri. Continued collaboration between national health agencies, international partners like WHO, and the aviation sector will be key to sustaining safe air travel while keeping Ebola at bay.
