Red Sea Film Foundation Honors Women in Cinema at Cannes 2024

The Red Sea Film Foundation hosted its annual Women in Cinema gala on Friday, May 17, 2024, during the 79th Cannes Film Festival in the south of France. The event highlighted the achievements of six women whose work—both on‑screen and behind the camera—is influencing film industries across the Arab world, Africa, and Asia.

First‑time African Trio of Winners

For the first time in the gala’s history, three of the honorees came from Africa:

  • Laïla Marrakchi – Moroccan filmmaker known for her feature Marock (2005) and recent documentary projects that explore gender dynamics in North Africa.
  • Genevieve Nnaji – Nigerian actress, producer, and director whose debut feature Lionheart (2018) became Nigeria’s first Oscar submission for Best International Feature Film.
  • Marie‑Clementine Dusabejambo – Rwandan filmmaker whose short The Mercy of the Jungle (2021) premiered at Cannes’ Critics’ Week and earned the Best Short Film award at the Africa Movie Academy Awards.

Speaking at the gala, Nnaji described the experience as a personal milestone:

“This is like my dream, you know, so it’s so important,” she said, adding that the festival atmosphere reinforced her ambition to return with a new film.

Dusabejambo emphasized the communal nature of recognition:

“We’re celebrated because we’ve done something valuable that I think is worth discovering. So it’s us, it’s our work, it’s the people we work with. We’re not alone.”

Additional Honorees from Asia and India

The remaining three awardees represented diverse cinematic traditions:

  • Tara Sutaria – Indian actress and recording artist who has starred in Bollywood productions such as Student of the Year 2 (2019) and is expanding her work into independent cinema.
  • Kamila Andani – Indonesian filmmaker whose documentary series Women of the Archipelago (2022) highlights female entrepreneurs across Indonesia’s islands.
  • Aixa Kay – Saudi actress and author noted for her role in the groundbreaking series AlRawabi School for Girls (2021) and her advocacy for women’s storytelling in the Gulf region.

Industry Presence and Festival Context

The gala attracted notable figures from the international film community, including Cannes jury members Demi Moore and director Chloé Zhao. Other attendees comprised Oscar winners Rami Malek and Alicia Vikander, as well as French‑American actor Lucas Bravo, known for his role in the Netflix series Emily in Paris.

According to the Red Sea Film Foundation’s annual report, its flagship festival has screened over 520 films from 85 countries since its inception. The next edition is scheduled for Jeddah from December 3 to 12, 2024, continuing the foundation’s mission to bridge cultures through cinema.

Why This Recognition Matters

Highlighting women’s contributions aligns with broader industry efforts to address gender disparity. A 2023 study by the European Audiovisual Observatory found that women directed only 22 % of feature films produced in Europe that year, underscoring the importance of platforms that celebrate female talent globally.

By showcasing creators from Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, India, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia, the Red Sea Film Foundation not only honors individual achievement but also amplifies voices that have historically been under‑represented in mainstream festival circuits.

As the festival circuit evolves, events like the Women in Cinema gala serve as both a celebration of current accomplishments and a catalyst for future collaborations across continents.
