The total sugar has been drastically reduced, but is it still the same popular cereal?

ProNutro Gets a Makeover

What Changed?

PepsiCo rolled out a “new generation” of the classic South African breakfast cereal ProNutro. The update promises a fresher texture, more ways to enjoy it, better packaging, and—most talked about—less sugar.

Sugar Cut Down

According to the updated nutrition facts on the Bokomo website, the new formula contains 11.9 g of total sugars per 100 g. The old version had 21.6 g per 100 g. That’s a 45 % reduction in sugar, which the brand highlights as a healthier shift while still keeping the cereal high in energy, plant protein, vitamins, and minerals.

New Texture & Uses

The recipe now has a smoother, more versatile texture. You can still eat it the traditional way—with milk in a bowl—but it also blends easily into shakes or smoothies. The packaging was tweaked to keep the product fresh longer and to make it easier to pour.

Why the Change?

PepsiCo says the tweak isn’t just about following health trends. The company pointed to aging factory equipment that could no longer guarantee the consistent quality fans expect. Updating the process helps avoid drops in taste or texture that might happen with older machinery.

Fans React

Social media lit up with mixed reviews. Some longtime fans love the lower sugar count and say the new texture feels lighter. Others miss the original crunch and sweetness, complaining that the cereal tastes bland or feels too soft. Memes and polls popped up comparing “old ProNutro” vs. “new ProNutro” across platforms like Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram.

Bottom Line

ProNutro’s makeover shows how a beloved staple can evolve to meet modern nutrition goals while trying to keep its core identity. Whether the new version wins over every fan remains to be seen, but the conversation proves how much people care about their breakfast choices.
