Two Gauteng police officers have been sentenced to 14 years in prison after killing a man held in a cell

Date:

What Happened in Honeydew?

In October 2019, a 40‑year‑old man named Thando Gazu died while he was being held in the cells of the Honeydew police station in Gauteng. According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), two officers assaulted and tortured him while he was in custody. His girlfriend, Msizi Memela, was also attacked during the same incident.

The Night of the Attack

Thando Gazu was arrested and taken to the Honeydew station. While locked up, officers Rudzani Ernest Marumo (43) and Thabang Gerald Makgotla (32) allegedly beat him repeatedly. The violence was described as torture, and Gazu suffered injuries that led to his death while he was still in the holding cell.

Who Were the Officers?

Both Marumo and Makgotla were constables employed by the South African Police Service. They were arrested by IPID shortly after the incident and charged with murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).

The Investigation

IPID conducted a thorough investigation, gathering witness statements, medical reports, and forensic evidence. The directorate emphasized that its work is based on careful fact‑checking and quality evidence collection. By the end of March 2026, IPID had secured 26 convictions for murder involving police officers, with more than 179 similar cases still awaiting trial.

Court Verdict and Sentences

The case went to the South Gauteng High Court, where both officers were found guilty of murder and assault. The judge handed down:

  • 14 years of direct imprisonment for murder
  • 3 years of imprisonment for assault

The sentences are to run concurrently, meaning each officer will serve a total of 14 years behind bars. In addition, the court declared them unfit to possess a firearm.

What This Means for Police Accountability

IPID welcomed the outcome, stating that the verdict shows its commitment to holding police officers accountable for abuses of power. The case serves as a reminder that misconduct will be investigated thoroughly and that those who break the law while wearing a badge will face serious consequences.

Conclusion

The tragic death of Thando Gazu in 2019 led to a lengthy legal process that ended with two Honeydew police officers receiving 14‑year prison sentences. The case highlights the importance of independent investigations, the need for transparency within law‑enforcement agencies, and the ongoing effort to protect citizens’ rights even when they are in police custody. For teenagers and young adults, it reinforces the idea that no one is above the law, and that justice can be served when authorities act responsibly and fairly.
