Gift of the Givers activates disaster response teams after severe hailstorms hit the Northern Cape

Date:

Gift of the Givers Steps Up to Help Northern Cape

Why Help Was Needed

Hailstorm Havoc

Severe hailstorms hammered the Karos, Leekrantz and Lambrechtsdrift areas, smashing roofs, breaking windows and leaving many homes unsafe. The sudden ice barrage added to the struggles families already face in the region.

Flood Fallout

At the same time, heavy rains caused flash floods in the Joe Morolong informal settlement near Kuruman. Water swept through streets, damaging houses and threatening the safety of residents who live in makeshift shelters.

Who Asked for Assistance

Provincial and Local Partners

The Northern Cape Provincial Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) reached out first. Soon after, the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality and the Dawid Kruiper Municipality disaster management teams also submitted requests for aid. The Kuruman Disaster Management Center added its voice, urging help for the flood‑hit settlement.

What’s Being Done

Aid Distribution Plan

Gift of the Givers confirmed that humanitarian supplies—blankets, food parcels, hygiene kits and temporary shelter materials—will begin distribution tomorrow. Teams are already on the ground, coordinating with local officials to reach the most affected families quickly.

Ongoing Relationship with Authorities

The organization has responded to several disasters in the Northern Cape over the past few years. Because of that history, Gift of the Givers works closely with the provincial government and local disaster management centres, which helps speed up assessments and delivery of relief.

Looking Ahead

While the immediate focus is on getting essential items to those in need, Gift of the Givers will continue to monitor the situation. If further damage is reported or additional support is required, the team stands ready to expand its response.

Final Thoughts

Teenagers in the Northern Cape can see how community action and organized relief make a real difference when nature turns harsh. By staying informed and supporting local efforts, everyone can play a part in helping neighbors bounce back stronger.
