South African Police Bust More Drug Dealers at OR Tambo

Recent Arrests at the Airport

Over the past three days, officers from the South African Police Service (SAPS) teamed up with Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) to catch four suspected drug traffickers at OR Tambo International Airport. The latest busts happened on Tuesday, adding to the two arrests made on Monday.

What Happened on Monday?

Acting on a tip, police watched a pair of travelers who were allegedly heading to Frankfurt and London with a stop in Doha. Officers stopped a 66‑year‑old Somali man traveling on a Dutch passport. A search of his bags uncovered 55 kilograms of khat, a leafy stimulant worth about R100 000 on the street.

Later that same day, officers found abandoned luggage at the terminal containing roughly 45 kilograms of khat, valued at more than R90 000.

Another Case from April 25

Earlier in the month, on April 25, 2026, a multidisciplinary intelligence team tracked a 33‑year‑old South African woman who was about to board a flight to Hong Kong. When her luggage was inspected, officers discovered hidden packets of cocaine and crystal methamphetamine with an estimated street value exceeding R500 000.

What’s Next for the Suspects?

All four individuals are expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court later this week. They will face charges related to drug possession and trafficking. Police spokesperson Lt. Col. Amanda van Wyk confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing and that more details may emerge as the case progresses.

Why This Matters

These arrests show how cooperation between SAPS and airport authorities can stop illegal substances from leaving the country. By catching traffickers at major travel hubs, law‑enforcement helps protect communities both locally and abroad.

Conclusion

In just a few days, SAPS and ACSA have taken four suspected drug dealers off the streets and seized a significant amount of khat, cocaine, and methamphetamine. The ongoing investigation aims to uncover any wider networks involved, and the upcoming court appearances will determine the legal consequences for those arrested.
