Skateboarding Across Africa: Jason’s Epic Journey

When Jason Vanporppal rolled into Cape Town on April 25, crowds cheered as if a rock star had just finished a world tour. His 6,000‑kilometer skate‑boarding trek from Kampala, Uganda, to the Mother City took 106 days and ended with a hero’s welcome.

Why He Started

Jason’s adventure began with a simple idea: raise money to build a skate park for under‑privileged kids in Uganda. He got the spark after skating with Ugandan friends Isaac and Ephraim, who told him how hard it is to find a safe place to ride.

“We see kids skating on dirt roads, getting chased away because they’re too loud,” Jason explained. “We wanted a real skate park—not just for them, but for the whole continent.”

The Route

Starting in Kampala in February, Jason pushed his board through:

  • Rwanda
  • Tanzania
  • Zambia
  • Zimbabwe
  • Botswana
  • South Africa (Johannesburg, Kroonstad, Bloemfontein, Beaufort West, Richmond, Laingsburg)

Along the way he soaked up local culture, tried his first braai, and met countless skaters who shared his love for the sport.

Challenges on the Road

Skate‑boarding 6,000 km is no easy feat. Jason faced:

  • Long stretches of rough, unpaved roads
  • Extreme heat and sudden rainstorms
  • Language barriers and occasional suspicion from locals
  • Physical exhaustion—his body ached, but his mind kept pushing forward

Despite the odds, he never considered quitting. “People called me crazy,” he said. “They thought it wouldn’t work out until you do it and show them.”

Reaching Cape Town

Arriving in Cape Town felt surreal. Jason’s brain still expected to wake up and keep skating, but the reality was clear: he had made it. He took to Instagram to share his thoughts:

“It’s incredible what just happened. What a body is capable of. What a mind is capable of. Just know that whatever you go through in life, you can get through it. And no matter what you think you’re worth, just know that you’re worth so much more than you think.”

Message to Teens

Jason’s journey is more than a skate‑boarding stunt—it’s a reminder that dreams need action, not just wishful thinking. He encourages young people to:

  • Believe in themselves, even when others doubt them
  • Keep going, no matter how bleak the situation looks
  • Use their passions to help others (like building a skate park for kids who need it)
  • Remember that life is a roller coaster—ups and downs are part of the ride

Conclusion

Jason Vanporppal’s 106‑day skate‑boarding odyssey across Africa shows what determination, community spirit, and a love for sport can achieve. He turned a personal challenge into a chance to uplift Ugandan youth, proving that one person’s wheels can spin change for many. His story rolls on, inspiring teens everywhere to chase their dreams, push through obstacles, and never give up—no matter how long the road ahead.
