Junior Springboks Power Past Argentina in Sanzaar U20 Rugby Championship Opener

The South African Under‑20 side, affectionately known as the Baby Boks, opened the 2024 Sanzaar U20 Rugby Championship with a commanding 48‑21 victory over Argentina at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on Monday. The match, played before a passionate crowd of approximately 11,000 spectators, showcased the depth and attacking flair that South Africa hopes will translate into future success at the World Rugby U20 Championship.

First‑Half Fireworks

From the opening whistle, the Baby Boks imposed a high‑tempo game plan. In the second minute, dynamic centre Ethan Adams burst through the Argentine defence to score the first try, setting the tone for a relentless first half.

Just six minutes later, scrum‑half Hendre Schoeman capitalised on a quick tap penalty to touch down for South Africa’s second try. Flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed added the conversion, extending the lead to 12‑0.

Argentina struggled to contain the Boks’ attacking waves. Seven minutes after Schoeman’s try, Ahmed sliced through the Pumas’ defence for his own try, making the score 17‑0. The momentum continued as winger Jack Benade intercepted a cross‑kick from Ahmed and raced away for the fourth try, pushing the lead to 24‑0.

Adams added his second try in the 25th minute, and Benade completed his brace before halftime, giving South Africa a commanding 36‑0 advantage at the break. The Baby Boks finished the opening period with eight tries to nil, a display that SA Rugby described as “a statement of intent for the tournament.”

Second Half and Argentina’s Response

Although the intensity dipped slightly after the break, South Africa continued to add to their tally. Substitute Oliver Reid scored early in the second half, and Benade completed his hat‑trick shortly afterwards, pushing the lead to 48‑0 by the 55‑minute mark.

Argentina finally broke the Boks’ defensive line in the 62nd minute when Federico Torre crossed for a try. Torre added a second try later in the match, and Tomas Dande touched down for a consolation score, leaving the final margin at 48‑21.

Despite the loss, the Pumas showed resilience, earning respect from the home crowd for their continued effort against a dominant opponent.

New Zealand Edge Australia in the Opening Double‑Header

Earlier in the day, defending champions New Zealand narrowly defeated Australia 34‑29 in an entertaining opener. The match featured multiple lead changes, with New Zealand’s full‑back Cohen Norrie scoring twice and Australia’s winger Riley Whitfield keeping the Wallabies in contention.

After a tightly contested first half that saw Australia lead 24‑12, the All Blacks rallied in the second period. A yellow‑red card reduction to 13 men for Australia allowed New Zealand to seize control, with Norrie’s second try and a late effort from Haki Wiseman securing the victory.
