Former Imam of Waterloo Road Mosque Released from Prison

Who is Moulana Farouk Rylands?

Moulana Mogamat Farouk Rylands served as the imam of the Waterloo Road Mosque in Kenwyn, Cape Town, for about 20 years. He was a familiar face in the local Muslim community and often led prayers and community events.

Why Was He Arrested?

In December 2023, the Ashrafiah Trust, which oversees the mosque, took Rylands to court after he refused to step down from his position. The Labor Court issued a ban against him on December 5, 2023, for allegedly not complying with a court order. He was subsequently detained at Pollsmoor Prison.

The Release and Community Reaction

On Thursday, after consulting with Rylands’ legal team, the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) announced that he would be released later that day. Hours later, Rylands walked out of prison.

His Message to the Community

In a video shared after his release, Rylands thanked the Kenwyn Muslim community and the wider Muslim community in the Western Cape for their support. He said:

“I just want to express my deepest gratitude. A heartfelt thank you to every single Muslim who came out in droves to support the challenge that I had to face. To support me in overcoming the challenge. To come out in droves for Allah SWT to fight the injustice and injustice.”

He added that while he was inside, he heard his name on the radio and felt a warm sense of gratitude from those who stood by him.

What He Learned Behind Bars

Rylands admitted that prison was not a pleasant experience, but he said it taught him valuable lessons. He noted that the prayers and sincere support (duas) from the community helped him endure the time behind bars.

Background of the Dispute

The conflict began when the Ashrafiah Trust asked Rylands to resign. Despite a petition signed by many local residents supporting him, the court upheld the trust’s request, leading to his detention.

Petition and Vote of No Confidence

Following a community meeting, the Kenwyn Islamic Society (KIS) announced that a vote of no confidence in the trust is underway. A document is circulating on social media for residents to sign if they support this vote.

Looking Ahead

Rylands’ release has sparked conversations about leadership, community rights, and how disputes within religious institutions are handled. Many hope that the upcoming vote and ongoing dialogue will lead to a peaceful resolution for the mosque and its congregation.

Conclusion

The story of Moulana Farouk Rylands highlights the power of community support during tough times. While his time in prison was challenging, the outpouring of prayers and encouragement from fellow Muslims gave him strength. As the Kenwyn community moves forward with a vote of no confidence in the mosque’s trustees, the focus remains on unity, respect, and finding a way forward that honors everyone’s voices.
