“PSL broadcast rights secure”: Canal+

Date:

SuperSport’s Bold World Cup Rights Announcement

During a live DStv Premiership clash between Magesi FC and Kaizer Chiefs, SuperSport seized the moment to reveal that it had secured the broadcast rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The announcement was delivered as part of a high‑impact marketing stunt featuring actor Idris Elba, which aired simultaneously across several African nations. While the spectacle drew attention, SuperSport emphasised that the move does not signal a shift away from its core commitment to local football productions such as the Betway Premiership.

The Live‑Match Stunt

The decision to break the news mid‑game was intentional. According to Rendani Ramovha, Director of Sports Content for Canal+ (English‑ and Portuguese‑speaking Africa), the stunt aimed to create a “disruptive and innovative announcement” that would spark conversation across the continent. By airing the reveal during a high‑profile match, SuperSport reached millions of viewers in real time, leveraging the captive audience of the DStv Premiership.

The campaign featured Idris Elba delivering a short, continent‑wide message that was localised for markets ranging from Tanzania to Nigeria and Angola. Ramovha noted that the effort underscored a key post‑merger insight: “Africa is not a single country.” Tailoring the message to each region allowed SuperSport to demonstrate its capacity for localisation while reinforcing its pan‑African reach.

Context of the Canal+–MultiChoice Merger

The announcement comes amid significant changes following the merger of French media group Canal+ with South Africa’s MultiChoice. The integration has prompted a review of SuperSport’s operations, particularly concerning domestic football coverage after DStv’s withdrawal as the main sponsor of the Premier Soccer League (PSL). Industry observers raised questions about whether the new ownership structure might diminish investment in local leagues.

In response, Canal+ leadership has sought to reassure stakeholders. Ramovha stated that the merger’s goal is to enhance, not diminish, the quality of SuperSport’s offerings:

“Our commitment is to ensure that, for as long as possible and for the foreseeable future, we have the best product in local football and continue to tell amazing stories and build local heroes who then go on and play for Bafana and international clubs.”

Assurances from Canal+ Leadership

Ramovha further elaborated that the merger would bring improvements rather than negative consequences:

  • Increased investment in localisation and customisation of production.
  • Adoption of remote‑production techniques that reduce the need for on‑site outside‑broadcast (OB) vans.
  • Deployment of advanced technology, such as remotely controlled all‑terrain camera vehicles, to maintain world‑class visual quality.

He explained that by centralising certain technical functions at headquarters—such as graphics, replay, and commentary—SuperSport can lower production costs while preserving, or even elevating, the viewer experience.

Production Innovations and Cost‑Saving Measures

One concrete example of the new approach is the trial of a remotely operated camera system that can be managed from an OB van in Randburg, eliminating the need for a full crew at each stadium. This method aligns with broader industry trends where broadcasters leverage IP‑based workflows to cut expenses and increase flexibility.

Ramovha highlighted that the lessons learned from these experiments will be applied to future World Cup broadcasts, ensuring that SuperSport can deliver a consistent, high‑quality product across all 104 matches scheduled for the tournament.

African Representation at the 2026 World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will feature an expanded format of 48 teams, with ten slots allocated to African nations—the highest number ever for the continent. This expansion means that, for the first time, a substantial contingent of African sides will compete on the global stage.

SuperSport intends to capitalise on this historic moment by producing dedicated content that follows African teams—including Bafana Bafana, Ghana, and others—through their preparations in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Ramovha described the vision:

“It’s bigger, it’s better, it’s 10 African countries. It used to feel like Africa was watching the World Cup, but now it feels like Africa is taking part… and it will be Africa against the world.”

The broadcaster hopes that at least one or two African squads will advance deep into the tournament, providing compelling narratives for its audience.

Looking Ahead: SuperSport’s Strategy for Local and Global Football

Beyond the World Cup, SuperSport’s post‑merger strategy centres on three pillars:

  1. Customer‑centricity: Placing the viewer at the heart of content decisions, leveraging talent and insights from across Africa.
  2. Innovation in Production: Continuing to test remote‑production workflows, advanced camera technologies, and data‑driven storytelling to enhance match‑day experiences.
  3. Content Expansion: Building a year‑round conversation around football—from pre‑match analysis on Mondays to post‑match discussions—thereby increasing share of voice and audience engagement.

By marrying the global prestige of the World Cup with a renewed focus on local football narratives, SuperSport aims to reinforce its position as Africa’s leading sports broadcaster while navigating the evolving media landscape brought about by the Canal+–MultiChoice union.
